Right to Choose: ADHD/ASD Guidance for Adults
This page outlines the specific pathway for adults seeking ADHD or ASD assessments through the Right to Choose.
Using Your Right to Choose (Adults)
To opt for a provider under Right to Choose, first talk to your GP.
Patient Requesting the Right to Choose Pathway: This pathway applies to both ADHD and ASD assessments for adults.
- Go to the ADHD UK website: The ADHD UK website.
- Research providers: Check their criteria, forms, and whether they offer medication titration, as not all do. RTC providers accredited by NHS Kent and Medway will prescribe and titrate until stable, then send a Shared Care Agreement (SCA) to your GP for ongoing prescribing.
- Complete and Return Forms: Choose a company, complete their required questionnaires/forms, and return all paperwork to your surgery's secretarial team. Processing can take up to 6 weeks.
- GP Appointment: If you haven't seen a GP about this yet, make an appointment before any referral.
Important Notes for Adults:
- Adult ASD Assessments: All adult ASD referrals must include a completed AQ50 (Autism Spectrum Quotient Form).
- Adult ADHD Assessments: All adult ADHD referrals must include a completed ASRS form (Autism Spectrum Rating Scales).
If you need both ASD+ ADHD Assessment you will have to fill in both forms.
Kent and Medway Specifics (as of April 1, 2025):
- All adult autism and ADHD assessments fall under Right to Choose.
- KCHFT (Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust) provides specialist clinical triage for autism assessment referrals to ensure clinical appropriateness. This triage does not impede your right to choice, which is offered by your GP at referral. If clinically appropriate, your referral will proceed to your chosen provider (e.g., Psicon).
- NHS Kent and Medway has accredited Psicon and Sinclair-Strong Consultants for adult autism and ADHD provision.
